SCRIPT WRITING
I lived and worked in Hollywood for 25 years and my biggest highlight was writing scripts for the long-running ABC/Disney Television daytime drama, General Hospital. After working at the show for many years in various staff roles (Music Supervisor, Music Director, Writer’s Assistant, Production Coordinator), I submitted a sample script, which led to a trial deal with ABC Daytime and later a Script Writing Contract. I ended up writing close to 100 episodes of General Hospital. I’m officially credited (IMDB) with 68 episodes, but I also picked up many half-episodes as a part of the team. I was lucky enough to be part of an extremely talented, multiple award-winning writing team headed by Robert Guza, Jr., Elizabeth Korte, Michele Val Jean and later Garin Wolf. My job was to write dialogue for 35+ diverse contract characters (including all the fan favorites: Luke, Laura, Sonny, Carly, Jason, Sam, etc.) for a show with a storied history that’s been on television for over 62 years (!). Mob hits, train crashes, hospital emergencies, courtroom battles, teenagers in love…we covered it all. I was required to write one episode (about 90 pages of dialogue) per week with a hard deadline. Next, I’d incorporate any notes/changes from our Script Editor and turn in my final version. I’d then read the ensuing 4 episodes for continuity and tracking purposes before writing my next episode. Sometimes it would be two scripts per week. I was accountable for any/all research required (legalese, medical terminology, etc), as well as maintaining story continuity and consistent character voices. During my time writing for the show, I was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards and won a WGA Award for Outstanding Script - Television - Daytime Drama. This was a dream job which unfortunately came to an untimely conclusion when ABC cancelled several of their less-successful Daytime Dramas and replaced our entire writing team (10 people) with another team to cut budget. As they say, “That’s the business” and “Welcome to Hollywood!” ;) The timing of the end of my Script Writing contract perfectly coincided with my brother (and business partner) patenting his Glowing Party Cup - which led to us diving in to our years of Entrepreneurship together.
